This chapter discusses the procedures and principles used to collect and work with the data. The subjects were scattered over a much larger area than the usual hospital ward setting. A formal questionnaire is used to gain a different perspective on the lives of clients in the community. The goal has been to present the scope of community attitudes and responses to the mentally ill, the subjective experience of psychosis, friendship among clients, and staff's views on numerous issues, to highlight its significance for clients, to present observational and empirical data pertinent to the subject, and to integrate this into some semblance of a comprehensible whole. A theoretical and interpretive framework is introduced and a detailed review of relevant anthropological and psychiatric research is presented.

Keywords:   formal questionnaire, community attitudes, mentally ill, psychosis, clients, staff, interpretive framework, theoretical framework
