The Play of Time

Janet Hoskins

University of California Press

The displacement of a ritual calendar that made Kodi the center for the ordering of time caused a shift in temporal perspectives which was to a certain extent irrevocable. It created “history” as an alternative to “heritage” and moved the locus of debate from the various evidences of narratives, objects, and actions to a new form of totalizing vision. This chapter pulls together the various strands of argument and shows their relevance to wider theoretical issues. Its conclusions are of three types: a local-level conclusion, which maps out the particular forms of Kodi temporality; a comparative conclusion, which places Kodi in the wider context of the politics of time within Indonesia and other nations of the developing world; and a theoretical conclusion, which reexamines the relations of totalities and practices from a historicist perspective.
