Almost 515 species form the fundamentals of this chapter, but more than half of them are of one species from Isla del Coco, Costa Rica. Specimens collected at La Selva Biological Station (Heredia, Costa Rica) have more information attached to them. This additional information can be accessed from a Biota database at INBio. Along with the El Palmito area of Mexico (Sinaloa), which has three species, La Selva is the most diverse site for Sparganothina, with four species collected. La Selva is the most intensively collected site for micromoths in all Central America. On the locality labels of the specimens collected at the lab clearing at La Selva Biological Station, the distances in meters refer to distances along forest trails from their origin, whereas measurements in meters at other localities refer to elevations above sea level.
