Sparganothina Powell is defined on the basis of the presence of a projection ventrally on the female ductus bursae and by the presence of large, rounded, and free lateral plates on the female sternum VIII. Sparganothina is the sister group of a clade composed of the following: “S.” nephela and “S.” decagramma, and eight new species related to them, along with Coelostathma, Rhynchophyllis, and five additional new species. Rhynchophyllis is monotypic and closely related to Coelostathma. Forewing shape is slightly mutable among Sparganothina spp., but even in S. anopla, and S. pollicis, in which the wing shape appears more quadrangular on pinned specimens. A produced forewing apex is considered apomorphic among Sparganothini. It is found in Rhynchophyllis and Coelostathma. The presence of a cubital pectern on the hindwing, in addition to the anal pectern, is part of the ground plan of the family.
