This chapter examines the early years of Ana Pauker, who was born Ana Rabinsohn on December 13, 1893, to Orthodox Jewish parents in Vaslui County, Moldovia. In the late nineteenth century, Pauker's parents migrated to the Romanian capital, where Pauker showed her exceptional intelligence at a very early age, and in 1918 met her future husband Marcel Pauker. The chapter also discusses the political situation in Romania as Pauker was growing up.
