This chapter focuses on the purging of Ana Pauker initiated by Gheorghe Gheorghiu-Dej. It explains that Gheorghiu-Dej rose to the position of get rid of Pauker after he emerged as the predominant force in the Romanian Workers' Party leadership following the verification campaign of 1948–1950. Pauker's purging was strategically structured to begin with an attack on Vasile Luca, which would compromise both Pauker and Teohari Georgescu through their close association with him. The chapter suggests that it was not clear whether Joseph Stalin has instructed Gheorghiu-Dej to unmask Pauker in ways other than exposing her deviationist policies.
