This introductory chapter explains the coverage of this book, which is about the Algerian War and the role of the United States in the fall of the Fourth French Republic. The book attempts put the Algerian War in an international context and deal with it as a world crisis, not simply a French one. It provides some details about this conflict and highlights the attempts made by six chief executives to deal with France's Algerian problem in the eight years of the war.
