Abstract
This chapter presents a brief ethnographic background of the Mayos. It explains that Mayo towns and villages are generally organized into ejidos or comunidades and highlights the substantial linguistic differences among the geographic divisions of the Mayos. The people who call themselves Mayos are united only by their common language and the fiestas they celebrate and this chapter suggests that in spite of the decline of Mayoness in the region, older villages from Huatabampo south to the Río Fuerte still exude a timelessness and an atmosphere of the traditional Mayo culture.
