This chapter narrates the events that occurred during the African safari which Alexander took with her father and Reverend Thomas Gulick in 1905. The first sections of the chapter describe their journey to Africa, and relate Samuel's observation and fear that a hunter's life suited Alexander too well. It shows Gulick's unexpected death and how Alexander grew to be an excellent shot. The latter half of the chapter examines the events that led to Samuel's sudden death near Victoria Falls, and the impact it had on Alexander.
