This chapter discusses tangible and imagined ways in which the roots of the Tibetan homeland penetrate and are selectively cultivated in India. It highlights the historicity of popular memory and tradition and discusses the efforts by the Dalai Lama's government-in-exile to preserve what is commonly referred to as the rich cultural heritage of Tibet. It also evaluates the risks and benefits of these preservation attempts.
