This chapter discusses risk and safety in the U.S. and compares them with those in other rich democracies. It investigates the reasons behind the high crime rate in the U.S. and attempts to explain the national differences and similarities in safety, security and risk. It examines whether national differences be explained by contrasts in political and economic organization that result in public-policy differences and whether public policies affect safety.
