This chapter provides some reflections on the preoccupation with loss and dispossession in a century that has also been obsessed with presence and possession. It looks back at the Indian Ocean, where it all started, in the 1860s, when Philip Lutley Sclater, ruminating over the eccentric fauna of the island of Madagascar and its relationship to the surrounding waters, summoned into existence the lost continent of Lemuria which spanned its length.
