Abstract

The premise of this volume is that historians are conditioned not only by the time in which they write but also by the place from which they write, and it uses American history as written in Europe as a case study of the role of location in the writing of history. It seeks to throw light on the often-hidden institutional and cultural factors that shape the writing of history, and thus is not a state-of-the-field survey of European historiography, but an exploration carrying implications for the writing of history anywhere, including the writing of U.S. history in the United States.
