(p.36) 2 The Teaching of Addai
Missionary Stories and the Formation of the Syriac Churches

Jeanne-Nicole Mellon Saint-Laurent

University of California Press

In this chapter, I analyze the Teaching of Addai, a text that describes the conversion of the city of Edessa. I show how the story is a product of Edessa’s fifth-century church. I show how the symbols of apostle, pious kind, and blessed city work together to create a story of Edessa’s past.
