In chapter 7, I analyze two hagiographic portraits of Jacob Baradaeus. I show how the production and circulation of hagiographies about Jacob Baradaeus served the memory-making work of the Syrian Orthodox “Jacobite” Church. I argue that the later life of Jacob shows the theological agenda of the emerging Syrian Orthodox Church.
