This last empirical chapter focuses on early labor-market entry, types of occupation, hours of work, and income for working respondents. Joining the work force rather than staying in school is not a positive outcome in adolescence. We examine its determinants and the existing differences among nationalities, but we also consider the income levels and extent of informal employment among youths who have found employment. By around 18, young persons should have a fairly clear idea of what they want to attain in adulthood. Accordingly, we examine the occupational aspirations of both children of immigrants and children of natives, as well as differences by nationality, gender, city of residence, and school type. The chapter closes with the construction of a Downward Assimilation Index, an analysis of its determinants, and a systematic comparison of results with a similar index constructed by CILS for children of immigrants in America. The implications and limitations of these comparative analyses are discussed.
