Chapter 3 explores attitudes of family members, community, and women toward polyandry, with focus on questions of stigma, shame, victimization of women, and female agency. It argues that although women sometimes were coerced, polyandry usually required the cooperation of women, and that sometimes women took the initiative to form these alliances.
