Markers of Status and Hierarchy
This chapter looks into the routine life of the latest generations that still “live” in the memories of informants. In contrast to the interest thus far on the time depth of ancestor–successor relations, it focuses on the spatial breadth of life conditions. By delineating salient markers of aristocratic life-styles, the chapter hopes to outline perceptible status boundaries and show the concrete mechanisms that operate behind the hereditary hierarchy.
Keywords: life conditions, aristocratic life-style, heredity
