Screen washing almost 25 tons of matrix from the Mt. Eden and San Timoteo formations resulted in the recovery of fossils, mostly dental, representing a minimum of thirty-six small mammal species arranging in age from late Hemphillian to Irvingtonian. The significance of these fossils lies in their utility as biochronological indicators that made possible the correlation of the magnetostratigraphy developed for the sequence to the global MPTS. Confident correlation could not have been obtained otherwise due to the absence of datable volcanic horizons in the Badlands. The proposed correlation of the San Timoteo Badlands stratigraphic sequence supports the timing of significant immigration events from both the trans-Beringian region and the Neotropics as determined from previous studies addressing the faunal succession of small mammals elsewhere in the southern United States.
