Rambo Litigators: Emotional Labor in a Male Dominated Job
This chapter examines the emotional dimension of legal work in a particular specialty of law, litigation. It discusses the predominant norms and expectations of gender-appropriate emotional labor for trial lawyers and for legal assistants. The chapter suggests that the rules governing gamesmanship in litigation derive from the adversarial model which underlies the basic structure of the legal system in the U.S.A., and that intimidation is only one component of gamesmanship. It also discusses the two types of emotional labor involved in litigation.
