Race Science Versus Sanskrit

(p.165) Chapter 6 Race Science Versus Sanskrit
Aryans and British India

Thomas R. Trautmann

University of California Press

This chapter examines the language-led ethnology of the British metropole. It shows how the methods and preoccupations of British-Indian ethnologists led to the formation of anthropology, describing how race science defined itself in Britain by disengaging from the tutelage of Sanskrit and Indo-Europeanist philology and putting itself in opposition to them. The chapter also discusses the contradictory relations of Prichardian ethnology to the ethnological methods of the Indian hands and to India as an object of ethnological study.

Keywords:   ethnology, British Indians, anthropology, race science, Sanskrit, Indo-Europeanist philology, Prichardian ethnology
