This chapter discusses the impact the 1960s had on American spirituality. It shows how the activists in the 1960s and their subsequent critics reshaped Americans' understanding of freedom. It explains how this new understanding contributed to the decline of a spirituality of dwelling and to the rise of a spirituality of seeking. It presents examples of people whose views of spirituality were changed by the 1960s and tries to understand the new freedoms given by these changes. It also studies the role of the civil rights movement in developing new ways of thinking about spiritual freedom, and the confrontation with evil. This chapter ends with an outline of the limits of spiritual freedom.
