This chapter studies the earliest known commentary on Still's work. This commentary, which was written by Forsythe, is also the only extended commentary that explains Still's music from a New Negro, Africanist position. It shows that Forsythe's judgments on Still and his work were based on music that is now considered as Still's “early” work.
