This chapter studies prevailing gender relations, patterns and processes of sexual communication, and the capacity of the female condom to empower women in sexual “negotiations” with men. It argues for a participatory approach to implementing interventions that are aimed at introducing new prevention methods, and identifies the structural factors imposed on the lives of women who are engaged in sex work.

Keywords:   gender relations, sexual communication, female condom, sexual negotiations, prevention methods, structural factors, sex work
