This chapter shows the complexity of nationalist imagery from the 1930s. It introduces the “carnival of national identity,” which is a series of comic sketches that initially looks like an eclectic combination of elements. The chapter illustrates how these sketches were embedded in the popular culture of the period, and discusses the iconic value of “oral heritage.”
