Education and Ethnicity among the Liangshan Yi

Education and Ethnicity among the Liangshan Yi

(p.238) Chapter 14 Education and Ethnicity among the Liangshan Yi
Perspectives on the Yi of Southwest China

Martin Schoenhals

University of California Press

This chapter explores both the process by which Nuosu students from remote villages become committed to education and careers, and the reasons why more of them do not. It confirms earlier observations about the nature of Nuosu ethnicity: it is constructed not in opposition to some ethnic other, but rather as an essential characteristic of a group of related people. Nuosu do not see themselves as in any way inferior to Han; in fact they see themselves as superior, both essentially and morally, and for this reason are not the least bit conflicted about school success. Ethnicity is not a barrier to education, if people think education can help them get ahead.
