A Vision Captured in Mosaic
This chapter discusses the mosaic found in the church, which was the main work of art within the basilica. It covers about 375 meters, and recounts in pictures the saga of the Sacred Heart and France. The chapter stresses that the basilica of the Sacré-Coeur is the key monument of modern French Catholicism, and is the structure around which one can organize the remarkable salvation story of France and the Sacred Heart. It was a story that dominated the spiritual and political thinking of French Catholics for more than 100 after 1789. The chapter looks at the devotion given to the Sacré-Coeur and then shifts to the impact of Comte de Chambord's death on the Sacré-Coeur. It ends by discussing the legacy left by Guibert and the Sacré-Coeur.
