An Introduction
This chapter introduces the Sacred Heart of Jesus, or the Sacré-Coeur, a religious order that dates back to the reign of King Louis XIV. It begins with a narration of the author's visit to the basilica of the Sacré-Coeur, which led to his research on the subject. The chapter introduces Marguerite-Marie Alacoque, who was an important visionary, and the entry of the Sacred Heart of Jesus into French political culture. It notes that this event coincided with another important historical event: the French Revolution. The discussion also looks at the Jesuit order, the critical discourse of the Sacré-Coeur, the start of construction of the basilica, and the people's devotion to the Sacré-Coeur.
