This chapter discusses Charles de Gaulle's failed plans for France that were related to Algeria. It looks at de Gaulle's optimism that peace in Algeria would leave France at the vortex of three concentric circles of power. These were shared power over the West with Great Britain and the United States, a European political community, and a Euroafrique based on France's former possessions. The chapter argues that de Gaulle defeated himself in Algeria by holding out in his negotiation with the rebels for impossible demands while playing an elaborate “double game.”
