The San Joaquin Valley

The San Joaquin Valley

Landscape, History, and Memory

(p.19) Chapter 1 The San Joaquin Valley
Industrial Cowboys

David Igler

University of California Press

This chapter begins by describing the San Joaquin Valley, where “there were wild horses and elk that can be seen running in every direction,” and then tells of how Henry Miller remembers the said valley—he recognized the potential for vast wealth when he gazed at the natural landscape. Next, it explains that a long history of natural change and natural extremes linked the seemingly wild landscape Miller remembered to the highly managed landscape of later decades. The chapter then notes that the boundless and seemingly static landscape Americans entered in the 1850s was in fact a remarkably complex and evolving region.
