This chapter describes the Jewish community in England during the resettlement period. The Jewish community of the resettlement period was overwhelmingly Spanish and Portuguese in origin. Most immigrants came with few material resources or artisanal skills and on arrival took to low-status itinerant trades to earn a living. As the Jewish population expanded, the opportunities for gaining a settlement and earning a living remained constant or even diminished. While some of the immigrants were able to find work as bankers and brokers, others became peddlers and pickpockets.
