On Her Own Terms

Barbara R. Stein

University of California Press

This chapter discusses the events that led to the founding and construction of a Museum of Vertebrate Zoology. Grinnell and Alexander both recognized the fact that the vertebrate fauna in the United States was vanishing, and they immediately acted on Grinnell's desire to found a center of scientific authority on the West Coast. Grinnell proposed to build the museum in his alma mater, Stanford University, but Alexander ultimately decided on the University of California at Berkeley. The chapter includes a section on Alexander's proposal for the museum that she submitted to the president of the university, and the initial stages of the construction for the museum.
