This chapter studies the enduring and exasperating romance of Sacajawea, who is hardly masked as the titular character of Mourning Dove's 1927 novel. It notes that there is a lack of information about Sacagawea, but her heroics have been retold by figures such as Charles Eastman and the United States Department of the Treasury. The chapter presents a discussion of Cogewea, the main character of Mourning Dove's novel, and points out that Red Progressives were confused at the tragic role that Indianness offered them.
