Soldiers versus Profiteers

Class War as Patriotism

(p.83) 5 Soldiers versus Profiteers
War, Memory, and the Politics of Humor

Allen Douglas

University of California Press

This chapter discusses the attack on the verbal heroism of the mass press, which was part of a wider sociology. During the war, the Canard divided French society into two groups: the French soldiers and their families, and everyone else. Part of the second group consisted of businessmen and businesswomen who extorted the first group through inferior goods and high prices. The Canard released articles that attacked these “legitimate” businesses and commerce. The chapter illustrates that the Canard preferred to cast sublimated class warfare as a struggle between the exploitative noncombatants and the self-sacrificing soldiers.

Keywords:   verbal heroism, extortion, class warfare, exploitation, businesses, inferior goods
