This chapter shows the defeat Isaiah Bowman experienced after the Second World War. It states that Bowman naturally assumed that important individuals would approach him after the war ended. However, most of these individuals delivered a crushing defeat for the “dean of American geographers.” It looks at his failure to build a school of geography and his realization that the new generation of faculty and students at the Johns Hopkins University were more alienated from his authoritative administration than ever before. The chapter also shows how Bowman contributed to the closure of Harvard's geography program, which he considered as a very personal defeat. A discussion of the cold war is included.
