This chapter highlights the author's experiences while pursuing his Ph.D. and while working for the music magazine Perspectives of New Music (PNM). In the early 1960s around the time when PNM was being founded, the universities were beginning to recognize composition as a legitimate subject for a doctorate, which up to then had been the almost exclusive domain of musicology. While not explicitly supporting the doctorate in composition, PNM broached a number of subjects that would be of interest to those establishing new programs. Perspectives of New Music has been established to provide a medium for articles that seriously explore those aspects of contemporary music with which composers find themselves most deeply involved. In addition, the objection to a Ph.D. for composers was a subset of the claim that composers had no place in the universities in the first place. PNM's affiliation with academe and with its Ph.D. program in composition in particular became unmistakable and the author objected to this.
