This chapter provides a history of the tectonic processes in Mesozoic California and discusses the marine depositional setting in which Mesozoic reptiles were fossilized. It covers the three periods of the Mesozoic—the Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous—in some detail to provide a grounding for the animal life of this critical geologic era.
