This chapter describes that the Sun is larger than the Earth. Since the Earth does not conceal even a small fraction of a degree, whereas the Sun occupies a magnitude of almost one half degrees, the Sun is larger than the Earth. The Sun both rises and sets over an extended interval of time. The shadow of the Earth is conical, and, if that is so, the Earth has as the cause of its illumination something larger than it—the Sun.
