Mapping Habitat Suitability for Giant Pandas in Foping Nature Reserve, China
This chapter introduces a novel mapping approach that integrates expert system and neural learning techniques, remote sensing, ground survey, and radio tracking data together within a geographic information system environment. It also indicates that the transitional and summer habitats need to be given more attention for conservation, and that human impact in and around Foping should be reduced. The DongHe and XiHe areas are very good areas for pandas and should be maintained as high-quality habitats. It is also suggested that farming and other human activities that have a negative impact on pandas in the central SanGuanMiao area should cease. The chapter then summarizes a study on the subject in panel report and provides some promising approaches. China's burgeoning human population and the resultant encroachment on panda habitat underscore the need for community development and habitat rehabilitation to proceed hand in hand.
