This chapter analyzes the role of elementary theory treatises in music memorization. It investigates how medieval music students memorized the musical material and discusses the use of short mnemonic verses to teach intervals, solmization, and syllables. It describes the versification of entire treatises help the student remember the material better and mentions that use of the hand and trees for memorizing intervals, modes, and mensural systems.
