This chapter opens with a discussion of the past experience of the author with Philip Brett. He recalls one evening in 1986 when he met Philip Brett at the annual meeting of the American Musicological Society in Cleveland. After several years of avoiding the meetings, the author had come to this one largely because of his then graduate student Lydia Hamessley, who wanted an introduction to the profession. The Cleveland meeting was exceptionally enervating, and he cringed at presenting a bright, young scholar to such dreary fare. While trolling the lobby, Lydia and the author spotted on the bulletin board a small note announcing a cocktail party for anyone interested in gay and lesbian issues. As it happens, the author had a composition student, Steven Houtz, who had asked the author about the possibility of gay music criticism, and the author decided to drop in to see if anyone at the party had any information.
