Selection experiments are a powerful tool for investigating the linkages between biochemical, morphological, and physiological traits that influence physiological performance, as well as for investigating how performance capacities may constrain or facilitate behavioral evolution. This chapter discusses selection experiments that have targeted organismal performance traits, with an emphasis on those involving locomotion or metabolism. These include wind-tunnel flight in Drosophila, endurance running in mice and rats, stress-induced analgesia in mice, and voluntary wheel running in mice.
