In January 1928, Gershwin began working on an “orchestral ballet” titled An American in Paris. An American in Paris comprises five sections, each with its own principal theme or themes, which, once stated, however, reappear throughout the piece. It received some excellent reviews. Many critics deemed the work better crafted and less pretentious; in short, a marked advance over the Concerto in F. An American in Paris subsequently became one of the most performed and recorded orchestral works of the twentieth century. In late 1928 and early 1929, George and Ira enthusiastically busied themselves with the show,East is West. In this particular case, George presumably welcomed the opportunity to revisit the kinds of Chinese-inspired styles that he had cultivated at the start of his career.
