(p.40) Chapter 2 Behind the Scenes: Training, Rehearsals, and Gigs
Making the Scene

Alex Stewart

University of California Press

This chapter looks behind the scenes—at venues and rehearsal spaces—while providing historical perspective on the types currently active. Musicians discuss their training, influences, and competition for work and recognition. Their discourse reveals how perceptions of musical and social boundaries are inflected by racial difference. Since the end of the swing era, three main avenues have remained for musicians to get that experience: school bands, rehearsal bands, and part-time working bands, including dance orchestras.
