This chapter examines the rise of repertory jazz orchestras in the context of the changing cultural significance of jazz, growth in performing arts centers, shifting patterns of funding by philanthropic and governmental agencies, and expanding corporate sponsorship. It also examines different worries such as the role of new compositions and arrangements, and whether leaders should build standing orchestras or draw on specialists for concerts on specific themes. Above all, the pioneers were preoccupied with how to finance their dreams.
