(p.176) Chapter 7 On the Edge: Sue Mingus and the Mingus Big Band
Making the Scene

Alex Stewart

University of California Press

This chapter looks at the Mingus Big Band. In keeping with the spirit of her late husband, Sue Mingus has assembled musicians from diverse social networks and backgrounds. In her role as artistic director, she presides over the “gunslingers” of the Mingus band as they recreate the hypermasculinist, competitive atmosphere that was integral to the Mingus ethos.
