Anti-Semitism and Ernest Bloch's Theories of Art
This chapter relates the story of the formation of Ernest Bloch's racially specific artistic personality by investigating how Bloch, with the help of his friend, Edmond Fleg, began his quest for a Jewish identity, and how specific concepts of race determined Bloch's artistic vision, self-identity, and reception. It traces these concepts from Wagner to Bloch by way of Bayreuth ideologue Houston Stewart Chamberlain and Bloch's friend Robert Godet, the French translator of Chamberlain's viciously anti-Semitic book The Foundations of the Nineteenth Century. Like many other Jewish intellectuals who came to accept their Jewish identity as the basis of their character and creative output, Bloch also subscribed to a wide variety of anti-Semitic beliefs.
