Hard Times for Hardrock

Hard Times for Hardrock

(p.206) Chapter 14 Hard Times for Hardrock
Steward's Fork

James K. Agee

University of California Press

This chapter discusses the policies for regulating mining operations of hardrock minerals in the Klamath region. It describes the Hardrock Act, the law that regulated the mining of hardrock minerals and legitimized miners' appropriation of federal assets. The chapter also discusses the proposals for mining reform and argues the need to tighten environmental regulations. The Klamath region still suffers from the unregulated activities of the Iron Mountain Mine Complex. Its vegetation was devastated by erosion and by heavy metals that poisoned the soils.
