This chapter presents an example of an integrative approach to the study of sensory evolution. It focuses on the sensory evolution of cetaceans, a group of mammals that moved from land to water during the Eocene. It describes the evolution of several sense organs for vision, hearing, balance, and mechanoreception. It concludes by suggesting that studying organ evolution integratively across all senses provides a better understanding of the evolution of the terrestrial to aquatic transition in tetrapods that have made this transition.
