This chapter introduces the Chumash, a hunter-gatherer group located in the Santa Barbara Channel region. This society was discovered by Father Juan Crespí in 1769. The chapter takes a look at the author's efforts to reconstruct the lives of the Chumash, starting with the significance of the research on the mainland Chumash, and then presents an overview of the Chumash and the development of Chumash sociopolitical complexity. It also discusses the theoretical considerations involved in the study and presents a brief overview of the following chapters.
